How about a custom content battle?

There probably wouldn't be time to also include models, but have a battle where all of the textures have to be user-made.

It would certainly push everyone's abilities a little bit.

This is also an amazing idea.
It's quite simple really. I want to be a professional level designer. I want this to be my job.

Maybe another template-ish battle however with a detailed focal point object to serve as the template.

Nobody is going to make a shitload of custom content for a map battle. We need to keep it simple and accessible to every level, not concentrate on making the very best stuff. Custom textures are fine, but when people start making multiple models just for a battle they've gone a little too far.

And that is not because I know I'd lose to some of the crazy shit people make in 3DS.

400 brushes. Each brush has to have the cut tool used on it seven times.

First person to get a map that renders in under a day -wins.

I suggest to not try to make anymore goatse-ish or sex-related entries for the map-battles. There's plenty of other sites around the net that deal with that, no need to include Interlopers.

I just searched the thread and you're apparently the first person to have mentioned it.

I think cyberpunk would be a good theme: map something straight out of Neuromancer / Snowcrash.
That is, of course, leaving out the myriad of cybepunk films available to take inspiration from.

Oh hell yes. Cyberpunk please!

Cyberpunk has crossed my mind, but to me it sounds more like a mapping style than an actual theme.. I'll keep it in mind though.

Maybe narrow it down a little with cyberpunk film noir as the two often go hand in hand, and I know film noir has been requested before. Or rephrase it as "high tech low life", as per wikipedia's description.

Specific play-area size?

Clarification: Limit contestants to a specific area of the grid they can use to create a playable map; something like 1024x1024x1024 units, or lower. There was a battle like this in the Gmod community that had a couple of really interesting results. One of them was actually very good-looking and would make a great hl2dm map with about 4-6 people.
