This is my heightmap, but when I put it as a vmf in hammer, it doesn't work like it should. Note that this is the heightmap used for mp_surf in far cry, I just wanted to use it to see how my map went along with it's guidelines. When I make it a vmf, instead of being islands etc, I just have a large bump in the middle and the rest is flat

eg.

---^--- instead of ^---^^^---^^-- (^= islands)

i also tryed to make a very small and simple, 1 mountian, ter with terregan (great program btw) but still the same, some errors or strange repeating peaks and in negative?

there was an error in dispgen with images of odd number size, could be that?

Can you post some image of your terrain in hammer or compiled? Could be the same problem, if input image in dispgen is not even numbers there could be output errors.

Shouldn't be problems importing or exporting heightmaps from far cry editor. If I remember correctly, because I uset it some time ago. This is a height map made upon a DEM and converted in sandbox:

great tutorial, I've also seen the more in-depth one you have here (click).

However, whether I'm using a DEM file or a terrain created with Terragen, whenever I view it in DispGen it always has a seam running diagonally through it like this:

Image

The seam carries over into hammer, and everything i've tried to do contains this seam. Any ideas?

Use a image size with even numbers, that should work.

right, can't believe i missed that... Terragen only offers odd-sized terrains it seems, 129x129, 257x257, 513x512, 1025x1025 etc... i'm gonna look to see if i can use my own values for these

edit: no, terragen seems stubborn about the odd filesize. once I converted my .ter to a .tif, I used photoshop to even out the X and Y size. works great now, thanks !

Hold on. Wouldn't this be a HUGE drag on systems that arn't top notch? I'm currently running:

Pentium 2.8 gig processor
64 mb gfx card
512 ram

Wouldn't it lag like hell on my system? Also, how do you texture something like that?
A man walks into a bar with a giraffe. They both get pissed, and the giraffe falls over. The man goes to leave and the bartender says "Aye, you can't leave that lyin' there!" The man says, "It's okay, it's not a lion. It's a giraffe."

Okay....

Why would the terrain inside the vmf file look completely different than the 3D image I saw with 3Dem?

I'm trying to get a mountainous terrain with mountains on 3 sides and a valley below them in the middle.

The DEM file I found appears to be what I want, but whenever I create a vmf file I get a terrain that does not resemble it in any way.

Anyone else run into this?

wtf?

Yeah, this happened to me, i think its something to do with that you cant have odd dimensions due to a bug in DispGen but all the ones i find have odd sides, and they are all real small too, 1025!
